naafil adjective awful • dreadful
Here aafil picks up the n of the preceding indefinite article. “Whit a naafil wey o workeen.” In some cases the a of the indefinite article is completely lost: “Naafil o folk here, min.” The indefinite article an is normally never used before a vowel in Orkney dialect, aafil being, apparently, the sole and unaccountable exception (naafil is not used in the North Isles).
